ELOA E SAMAEL

oil and pencil

53 x 73 cm

2024

Oil painting created by Vethan Sautour. A black surface with a standing brooding angel looking down with his wings resting on either side and curly hair, this is Samaël. Sitting at his feet on the floor, knees brought to her chest, is Eloa, an angel without wings, relaxed and gazing in the distance. Both of them have been drawn across the surface with a simple pencil, giving a surreal aspect to the painting, a silver line across the shiny black surface, mirroring the viewer, so he can contemplate his own reflection through the prism of this thousands of years old dynamic. The painting is inspired by the poem "Eloa ou la Sœur des Anges" or "Eloa or the sister of angels" by the French poet Alfred de Vigny and depicts its main characters.
